| SPEARHEAD'S LETTERS TO THE PRESIDENT CONTEST ENTRIES | PAGE 2 >> | |
Dear President Bush, I'm embarrassed to be an American. I want to thank you for putting me in this position. With your vague sense of reality and your deception, you've taken our country off the deep end. As the father of a disabled vet and the father-in-law of an active member of our Armed Forces. I feel as if my family has invested enough in your so-called "war on terror.'' Speaking to my daughter on the phone this evening, she stated that, "most of her firends in the military don't want to be in Iraq, but it's their job." Even now, disabled and facing pending brain surgery , she's hesitant to say anything bad about "her Commander-in-Chief.'' Thank goodness, myself and the majority of the American people are not as young and naive as she and her friends are. President Bush, you are a dissgrace to the office you now hold. It's time to man-up and admit the mistakes you've made. Bring our young people home to be with the families that LOve and need them. If you're not mature and educated enough to do that, than do us all a favor and throw yourself on your sword. Sacrificing your life is certainly worth the lives of thousands of others that you're willing to sacrifice in the name of "saving face.'' Sincerely, Mike MacDevitt ps my daughter & son-in-law do not agree with me composing or sending this letter--but I LOve them none-the-less.

George W. Bush: Hi! So, how's the presidency gig working out for you? It seems like you've kind of fucked it up a little bit, huh? I suppose it's OK because, after all, it's only human to make mistakes. It's just that most people I know tend to learn from their mistakes and make some changes. Oh well, some of us need longer to learn than others. You probably already know that there are a lot of humans out here that are exceedingly angry with you and your administration. We're angry for a lot of reasons, too. By now, though, we recognize that you don't particularly care what we think about just about anything. By the way, that makes us feel angry, too. But who am I kidding? It has become very clear that you and your gang are driven by what you can control and you have no intention of really listening to public opinion. Still, you must be feeling a little sting from the whole 30% approval-rating thing. I have to tell you, it feels fantastic to be part of the 70% disapproving majority. It's been a long six years I've been waiting for that feeling! But I digress. Yes it's true; you and I live very different realities and have very different motivations. Instead of telling you off, instead of trying to shame you, instead of begging you to please just come to your senses, I'd like to simply remind you about the power of choice. We've seen your choices to use your power in ways that must make sense to you (or at least to someone you know), even when the rest of the world pleads and rationalizes in the opposite direction. Luckily, we little people of the United States are still blessed with the opportunity to choose and decide for ourselves. That's right, we are the deciders, too. And so, I know I am not alone when I say to you that my choice is to live a life that rejects greed, war, revenge, lies and hate. Instead, when the daily cruelties of this world present themselves, I choose to manage them using peace, love, and tolerance. This choice means I must first let go of anger and blame; then I must accept the fact that we all suffer, and resolve to continue living with positivity and love in my heart. The real challenge is to love and believe in people who try their damnedest to make it as difficult as possible. Man, you think being president is hard? Try practicing tolerance sometime! No really, I think you should try it. You might notice, as I have, that people around you will like it and start making similar choices in their own lives, too. Maybe I'm putting you off with my hippie talk, though. I believe there is another word that describes this method of getting along with our species. It's called diplomacy. Maybe it's time to bring some of that back into our government. What can I say, George. Your presidency has been a real struggle for everyone to live through, but maybe it's not too late to for you to start making different choices. How else do we get started on solving all the problems we face as a global community if not by at least trying a little compassion? The way I see it, the only chance for the survival of humanity is if we stop 'otherizing' and start recognizing that we are all One. If we could put just a little effort into to accepting our vast differences rather than continuing a cycle of paranoia and ignorance, perhaps then we can actually begin to save the world. As president of the United States, you have the unique opportunity and profound responsibility to be an example and help speed up the process! Unfortunately, you have not lived up to our expectations; and, quite frankly, it really sucks. Mother Teresa once said, "Do not wait for the leaders. Do it alone. Person to person." With that in mind, I do not wait for the leaders to start acting like they care. I choose peace. I choose love. I choose tolerance. Love, Rita

Dear George Bush, I knew of you when I was little you were my governor then. I looked up at you with my bright blue eyes and thought "Wow, I wish I was somebody as important as him." Now that I look back on it I realize how young and how innocent my mind was. You my old friend are nothing like my idol nor are you as important as you were. I'm sorry but the way this world has come to be, I more than half way blame it on you. Ah, yes, the other presidents did their share but you, Sir, if I should even call you that have served us almost 8 years and have only dug us into a deeper darker hole. There are starving people everywhere, and children without parents. Children crying and plants dying all across this nation. Man, if I could give you an award it would be for carelessness. Why? Because the world is wasting away. We have millions of dollars going to the famous and spoiled but how much do we have going across seas. And NO I do not mean the war! You are making things worse by sending these soldiers over to Iraq. No wonder these people dislike America (most of what we have shown them is hate). If I had the money I'd go to other countries I'd help every person I possibly could. I don't like sitting here pointing out your wrongs but when the world has become this bad I feel that I need to take it into my own hands. This letter will go to you and all you will say is "another damn hippie trying to save the day". Hopefully I'm dreaming and you will accept it with open arms but the reality of it is another tree will be wasted away. You say "illegals" coming from other countries are a problem but they are just people like you and me searching for something better. Well maybe their life would be better if we helped them out. Either by letting them stay here as a friend and as family or giving them the life they always dreamed about in the comfort of their own home. How can you look at the sick and poor and brush it off like dust on your shoulder? How can you build a bomb shelter for you and only a few others letting the rest just shrivel up and die? How far are you going to take it? One thing I can assure you "Mr. President" is you can't take it that much further until the whole world and its future is messed up and changed forever. Oh wait, I'm sorry? That has already happened. I see people dressing and acting the same. It's like we are robots playing your silly little game. How about you look around and actually see the pollution, the hungry and the people in pain suffering from lack of help and care. Most people think a gold ring is more important than an ill dying child whom they have never met. If asked about it they would say "nonsense I would help that child in a heartbeat" but the truth is they just bought an expensive piece of jewelry a week ago the thought never crossed their mind. We can give more to others and care less about ourselves. Every day this happens and every day the world gets worse. So help me change these peoples mind about poverty and about them selves. Help the world a little more and I can assure you more smiles will appear. Thank you for your time and even though this seems sarcastic I mean it from the bottom of my heart; I hope you have a wonderful day Mr. Bush. Sincerely, Maddie

Mr. President Why is it so hard for you to hear us? We say it every day, bring our people home- fix our nation here. Our shelters are full and we were turned away. I wonder if your children ever went hungry? Have you ever had to explain that you don't have enough $ for them? No because our blood =your money. You've had Saddam hung and given the bin Ladens a free trip home We know their money lines your pocket... You think we don't know, that we are brainwashed- asleep but not all of us are and we are spreading the word...no fighting for peace Shannon

Dear Mr. President Let me start by saying that I do not consider you a bad man. I think a lot of this started because you saw people hurting. Using our tears to fuel a war machine, uniting helpless people against a common, distant enemy and putting a face to our attackers may have seemed the right thing to do, but vengeance has no place in the solution. Adding hundreds of thousands of families to the list of those who lost loved ones does not either. People can easily say that things were worse before, but at least then, you knew who your enemies were. You could live in your home with water and electricity. You could walk the streets without choruses of gunshots and bombs. I cannot imagine rocking a baby to sleep in the dark night, silence broken by explosions only to know that the next day would be more of the same thing. I wish I knew what the solution was. I realize that it is a difficult situation to get out of, but liberating a people should ultimately end with giving them back control of their lives and land. I do not think that adding more lives to those that have been lost is the answer. Let's empower, not belittle. Let's educate instead of oppress. But war is never simple. What I do know is that we as a nation cannot continue on the path we are on. There must be changes for our children and our children's children. You have been in office for six years, what legacy do you see yourself leaving? Besides the "Quotable president" calendars and posters, the grammatical errors, and cultural faux pas- what will people remember you by? Right now is a critical time for the earth. It seems to me that maybe, instead of spending billions on making live worse - there are ways to make lives better. If the Federal Government could subsidize American automakers production of hybrid vehicles, there would be a multi-pronged effect: those of us who would like to stop being part of the problem, but lack resources, could cut consumption and be part of the solution.- Manufacturing jobs would come back to the US where there are labor laws and unions that ensure we are not supporting the exploitation of those that are not so blessed- We would cut the pollution of the world's water by reducing the transportation of foreign goods- American's could be proud of their contributions to this global problem and the world could see us making an effort. I realize that you have some buddies who might not be happy with this, but it doesn't seem like popularity is very important to you. It just seems to me that the billions of dollars you have requested to continue this war that the majority of Americans do not support could be spent in more popular ways. TV told me that for the price of a cup of coffee a day, you could feed a child. At today's coffee prices, that might be a little steep, but it has to be better than what we are spending on killing. I don't know who pays the electric bill at the White House. I know mine last month was $330. I live pretty frugally and I realized that I am spending over $10 a day on electricity (more than a cup of coffee) and I don't even get to spend much of my time at my house. In the morning, I have to drop my child off with someone else so I can go to work, pay for car insurance, health insurance, electricity, water, taxes and someone to take care of my child so I can go to work to pay for car insurance, health insurance... etc. If I could do some simple upgrades on my house, I am pretty sure I could cut that bill significantly, but my credit is shot and I don't have the means for the initial investment. Seems like a low interest (or no interest... HA HA, just kidding on that one) loan could be paid back with the money that I could save on my bills. Of course, I guess no one would make any money off of that plan... The other thing that I don't understand is how my husband, who has worked his entire life for his family business laid in bed on Christmas day 2 years ago, in crippling pain, afraid to go the hospital because he lacked insurance. Have you ever felt that way, sir? When your daughters were little girls, did they ask Laura why daddy wouldn't be able to eat dinner with them? It's a horrible, helpless feeling to work your whole life and not be able to afford medicine. You will be happy to know that I left a job that I loved for one with affordable health insurance for my family. Anyway just a thought... I digress. In closing, thank you for your time. I feel a lot better having gotten some of this off of my chest. It's never too late to make a change for the better. Sincerely, A thinking citizen

Dear President Bush, What would you do if you were given 300 million dollars to spend everyday? Ignite cultural chaos? Promote religious murder? Uproot families and neighborhoods? Create a situation that results in the killing of thousands of innocent civilians? Of course not, unless you had backed yourself into a corner of mistakes, poor judgments, and inflexible ideology. As the tragedies of the war in Iraq are reaching appalling proportions, so is the cost for our economy and our environment. Rather than pumping money into an unfounded war, it is time to invest in a sustainable future. As we move forward in the twenty-first century, we must look toward a new way to get our energy. The levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and consequently the earth's temperature, have been steadily increasing in recent decades. The latest IPCC report concludes that human activity is the primary cause of this current warming. The continued climate change will potentially alter ecosystems, trigger glacial melts, and redirect ocean currents, increasing the frequency of extreme weather events and causing a rise in sea level. Our society's dependence on fossil fuels has left us on a brink of a global climate disaster. We need a renewable energy source that can be domestically produced without the environmental degradation of oil extraction. Biodiesel, a renewable fuel produced from vegetable oils, can be used in diesel engines and oil-fired home heating systems with only minor modifications. These fuels are biodegradable, nontoxic, and support our domestic economy. Producing our own domestic fuel reduces our dependence on foreign oil, enhancing our national security. If we no longer need to occupy foreign countries in order to gain control of oil resources, we can spend our money on research for new fuels that are not only renewable, but also more energy-efficient than current systems. We will be saving the average consumer money off their home heating bills and the price of gasoline as well as supporting a cleaner, more economical future. As the leader of our country you should be guiding the way towards an energy-efficient future. Encourage people to carpool to work or use public transportation. Promote hybrid cars and encourage drivers to pump up their tires. If everyone inflated their car tires to the proper pressure, we would save more oil in fuel efficiency than is available in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge. Increase rebates for buying energy-efficient appliances and encourage people to hit the switch and conserve electricity. While these are all attainable goals, there are some issues that can only be tackled through our government, through you. We are one of two countries that have yet to ratify the Kyoto Protocol even though we are the single largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world. You continue to assert that placing restrictions on car emissions would hurt our economy, but the rest of the world, including China, has placed strict restrictions on car manufacturers. Recent proposals that advocate drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and off the coast of Florida are not the answers to our energy crisis. It is your job and your responsibility to help us kick our "addiction to oil." Renewable energy, sustainable peace. Sincerely, Ben Dudek

Dear Mr. President, This is the Lord speaking. You have a monkey on your back. End the war, get that monkey off of you and put it on a train. Your people are God fearing people, they will understand. If anyone questions you tell them my God told me to end it. I've got your back. Be strong. Keep your faith. Oh, one other thing if you don't there will be 14 hurricanes hit the U.S. this year. I don't want to see that happen.

Dear Mr. President, What on God's Green Earth were you thinking? You sent all those men and women off to die and fight in a war that many, many people (including soldiers) were (and still) are not even clear on what exact reason it was being fought. First it was 911, then that became very apparent that this was not the case. There were no vile weapons to be found over 'there'. So many people on either side have perished because of you, are you really that treacherous human being so many think you are? You just recently sent 20,000 more troops off to war in Iraq; I guess you figured a few more dead wouldn't matter? Why stop now? Watching you on screen delivering your so wonderfully eloquent speeches, wow! Maya Angelou should take meetings with you. It appears to me that you are a badly designed robot, possibly from the small town of Stepford? You are about as abysmal as The Stepford Wives re-make, and that's pretty bad. Your opinions on gay people are quite revolting, I guess you probably hope that the soldiers that die in Iraq are gay or lesbian right? You want to withhold the basic Human rights from homosexuals, you wish to ban the basic rights of homosexuals to be more exact. But, I gotta tell you, gay marriage and civil unions are becoming increasingly available all over the world. And I am sure (due to your limited amount of programming) you have not realized that eventually, in good time, everyone in America will have that ‘basic right’ to become married. There is nothing you can do to stop this. So, go ahead 'what goes around comes around'. And it seems to me that you have a lot that is 'gonna be comin' around.' God! That sounds like the title of a Dixie Chick’s song, speaking of them you never did give me back my Dixie Chicks CD I let you borrow. What's up! Michael

Hello Mr. President, I welcome the opportunity to address you and you advisers as I have been granted the rare opportunity to attend a highly public forum for which I have no qualms about clearing my calendar in order to fully exploit such an opportunity. Great thanks goes to Mr. Franti for allowing me to speak for so many who won’t or can’t speak for themselves. Are you listening? I am a citizen. I am a contributor to the greatness of this nation as well as a citizen of the world and all that takes place upon it. You are too. I am a taxpayer. More importantly I am a voter. Your job depends upon my approval of your performance, not upon your deciding you want to remain in office or not. You answer to me as well as a few million others; don’t forget about us. I am here to represent our collective TAP on your shoulder. Don’t try to shrug me, rather us off. We pay far more attention to you than you give us credit. We watch you. We listen to you. Are you listening to us? You speak of your faith. We wonder what it really is that in which you claim to have faith. This might be a good time for you to recall what most of us learned in Sunday school or elementary school. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Does that sound at all familiar to you? Would you like us to lie to you? Would you like us to spy on you? Would you like us to rob the lives of your children by sending them into a political meat grinder? Would you like us to smear you, your family, you r friends, your neighbors, your choices, your views? Leading this nation is not about quippy remarks and waving flags. Leading this nation is about tolerance; we as citizen seem to know that far better than you seem to know this. Every citizen of this great nation has a heritage whether long in this country or short, all of us at some time or another is represented by someone who came to this continent either struggling or because of opportunity. Most of us have something to offer, the rest are here to give you an opportunity to make a difference. What are you going to do besides foster hate, violence, fear, racism, and intolerance? You can still make a significant, valuable, thoughtful, generous, far-sighted contribution to more than your personal bank account and those of your cronies. If you have ever thought you were struggling, you have not even begun to consider the struggles of so many of your constituency, that’s right most of us the citizens those people for whom you work. Don’t forget you work by the grace of our tolerance. Make a difference. Most sincerely, Shannon

Dear President Bush: Being in your position, you probably demand a lot of respect. Unfortunately for you, respect is not something that can be demanded, the only way to attain respect is to earn it. This is again unfortunate for you as in your years as President, you have not demonstrated a single quality worthy of anyone's respect. When one begins his presidency with dishonesty and deceit and trickery; well that just doesn't give me a lot of faith that anything else he does as President will be any better. I did not vote for you Mr. President, the majority of the American people did not either. You did not win the election. You cheated it (with the help of your cousin John Ellis). You cheat the American People everyday you are in office. When you go to bed tonight, instead of dreaming about your oil and your war money, I want you to think about all the families of the soldiers who are fighting this war for your selfish pleasure. I want you to have to look into all the eyes of the families and explain why their children, husbands, wives, friends and family are dying in Iraq. Being as there is absolutely NO reason for them to fighting over there, I'm sure the lie you feed the families won't go over well. You have already told us very different reasons for the war: first it was to find weapons of mass destruction. When you realized there were none, the reason became revenge on those responsible for 9/11. You, Mr. President are responsible for 9/11. So now your reason has changed again to bringing peace and democracy to the Middle East. As President, you are given quite a bit of power. It surprises me that you are able to use your power the way you do. Instead of concentrating on important things such as global warming, poverty, famine etc., you are concerned with spending billions and billions of dollars on this war. You say you the war is restoring peace and democracy to the Middle East. I'm sorry, explain to me again how bombing this land is going to bring PEACE? In the words of Michael Franti and Spearhead, "You can bomb the world to pieces, but you can't bomb it into peace." If peace is truly your desired result of this war, why is there even a war? It is hypocritical to fight a war to attain peace! You complicate things Mr. Bush, you do this to confuse people and trick them into supporting you. The answer is really so simple; bring our people home! Oh, and Mr. Bush, Happy Presidents Day! Sincerely, Courtney

| To President Bush and All the Beautiful
People of the World, The 2008 election is just over 600 days away and the prize of the White House is wide open. So I find this letter might be helpful to President Bush and whoever finds him or herself in the Oval Office, in making some important decisions that might benefit not only the people of the Untied States but everywhere else in the world. Because it is not just about Americans and our oil and our health, there are billions of other people who deserve the same opportunities that we have living in this country. Shortly after WWII the United Nations wrote the declaration of Human Rights due to what happened to the Jewish people during the Holocaust. Among many items, some of the basic human rights included the right to clean water, food, education and medicine and of course the right to practice one's own religion. However there are millions of people in the world today starving to death or dying due to diseases that are preventable. Africa is a continent, yes President Bush; Africa is a continent, not a country, being destroyed by the AIDS epidemic. Across the globe 11 million children die every year before their fifth birthday, almost all from diseases that could have been prevented and 3 million people of all ages die of AIDS. These numbers will continue to grow worse. Action has been taken but obviously not enough. If this country can spend billions of dollars on the war in Iraq than we should be able to put the same amount of money towards combating AIDS and providing people with clean water, food and education. And these human rights don't just apply to the rich, but for everyone on every continent in every country. No matter what race or religion or political ideas one might have, human rights are for everyone. That is the beauty of being human. Now I refuse to stand up here and preach why the war in Iraq was unjust and why we shouldn't be there. I have engaged in too many debates with people on this topic. But I do think it is important for people to understand why the attacks on 9/11 happened and what should and can be done to prevent this from happening again. As some would like to believe that it is as simple as "they just hate us for what we stand for," unfortunately, it is not that simple. Actually it is that simple, their answer is just wrong. Islamic killers are not trying to kill us because they dislike our domestic politics, but because of our foreign policy. Everyone knows that 15 of the 19 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia, where the holiest sites of Islam stand. They want our troops out of Saudi Arabia and if we don't get out, they are going to come over here, and that is exactly what happened. So instead of trying to blame everyone for what happened lets see if we can understand the problem and eventually try to find a solution. Because obviously whatever we are coming up with right now, just isn't cutting it. And the stakes are higher than ever. With all due respect President Bush, the people of the world do not have to choose between our side and the other. I once read that the beauty of human civilization---our music, our art, our lives---lie beyond these two ideas and I believe that. This is what makes us human; this is what makes all of us beautiful. So I have decided that when I graduate from UC Berkeley in May I will attempt to find a solution to the problem that we face in the Middle East, as this is where I have dedicated my studies and I understand the roots of the problems that exist. Lets also remember that we are doomed to make the same mistakes as in the past if we don't learn from history. And in history you learn that no empire lasts forever. So President Bush, take what you want from this letter. I am no expert; I am just a college student who cares about the fate of this country as well as the rest of the world, as so should you. | Dear Mr. President, Wouldn't it be great if you could write a letter to the President, and know for certain that it would actually be read by the President? What if someone from the general populus had a really great idea?, or solution? How might they truly reach their most key servant? How could they know they had reached them? Here is a suggestion...that your responsibilities to the nation my be served more easily, and a greater understanding could be found by trusting the American people to participate responsibly in a public letter writing program. It is understood that there are many things that we the people are unaware of...and for good reason...possibly very good reason. We the people may not know all that our elected officials do, but we are greater together, and have many great ideas that the current system prohibits us from sharing with you. I feel certain that many solutions are being overlooked and have a proposal to strengthen our nation through petitioning the people to help. Appropriate consideration for the importance of the office of the President must be considered...you hold the supreme position in our constitutional republic. That office has a rich and valiant history and should not be disrespected. I am certain that you did not lightly enter into the undertaking of such a heavy mantle of the nation and its awe-inspiring responsibilities. I could not stand up to the scrutiny that you are exposed to daily and thank you for your commitment. Kindly consider allowing folks - citizens (our neighbors, you and me) to put their names in hat so to speak, to be drawn publicly in a national lottery to read their letter aloud to you and hear your response all on television. Of course, participants would agree to protocol guidelines to protect the dignity of the office and your security. Participants would post their letters to a website for the viewing of the entire nation and the entries would also be available to read at the post office. All would be asked to politely refrain from merely ranting and complaining...those who choose to do so would do so publicly as free people in a free nation. The public posting of all submissions would allow the populus to see all the great ideas, and the not so great ideas, so that when one is chosen to read their letter aloud to you, they could defer to someone else's letter and allow them access to you. Bi-monthly sit downs would give a month for posting to happen, a month for viewing and preparation for your response. A rebirth in faith in our representative form of government might emerge. A government of the people, by the people, and for the people might happen and we could all more fully utilize the vast resource of experience, consideration, and contemplation we have in one another. This suggestion and request are humbly made by an honorably discharged veteran of 5 years service in the U.S. Navy. I am flawed and unable to attain such an honorable position of duty to the nation as you protect. Thank you again for serving. Humbly.........Ike |

Dear My President, Sometimes a fresh start is best Every day there is a new morning, every night a time to rest The insecurities, the furies of yesterday I have to tolerate you, Please try to tolerate me too We are members of the same country and if you truly want to be a peacetime President Resign. and open your mind to the idea that someone other than you might hold you the key. You talk about security but let me demurely suggest that no matter how effectively you may be ignoring bomb threats and nuclear tests in favor of the progress of your color-coded danger system that it might be missing the point. And arresting some hippie who got caught smoking a joint outside an airport does nothing to support this country. If you want to increase our social security set me free from the privatization of my nation. Industry can not police itself, corporations should not be free to lease themselves to restructuring Iraq-maybe Mac would come to my school and donate a 1000 computers a day if they thought the government would pay to buy their souls and their silence about the violence they saw there. Beware as you leave the children behind that you will find a war you cannot win and one day we will need their minds to counteract the strength of these sins. I can't even BEGIN to believe you call yourself a Christian. I try not to be angry with you but what would you do? Anger is my right in this democracy and your hypocrisy leaves me speechless. If you want to defend this nation don't go on vacation the next time an American city starts to drown, be AROUND to offer relief from the grief of losing ones every possession. Don't do nothing for a week and call it a lesson. Start stressing personal responsibility as public acuity increases and releases its rage all over staged elections and people start demanding corrections for your neglections of our Constitution. You need to take your job more seriously. There are a lot of people that are trying furiously to conduct themselves with benevolence, Erupt from your cocoon of detached irrelevance Consider the cry of 10 million people worldwide Who disagree with your style Denial is no longer a choice, my voice will not be silenced by your arrogance, I refuse to listen to a man who wants to build a fence around my country, a man who looks like a monkey, a man who says things like "hunky dory" to describe the state of the economy. I hope you don't think it's mean of me to remind you that a 43% approval rating was not part of your campaign. While we're on the subject, I don't appreciate spending 5 billion dollars a month because you can't tell the difference between Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. I'll give you a Clear Skies initiative-look at a widowed Iraqi mom and tell her you'll stop the bombs. Tell her you're sorry American soldiers killed her son and raped her daughter. Apologize to her for the state of her drinking water. Apologize to everyone as the climate is getting hotter because you let Exxon Mobil buy the Kyoto Protocol and used the money to buy a picture for your wall. If you want to sneer at an idealist I'll take your shit with pride-arms open wide to the prospect of saving the world. If, tongue curled, you want to call me an activist I'll agree-you see I believe a change can start with me and I know no one who should find that so true As you So maybe we have something in common after all. When your free fall is over I'll be waiting to pick up the pieces And Jesus save us all. Sincerely, Caroline

Dear Mr. President, Why do we hate why do we kill Why do we need to conquer more still When all around is excess waste We're taught to consume but not to replace Where is the vision for the future Nobody wants your war and torture History forgotten stands to be repeated No child left behind but some will be impeded Some will be jailed others killed So your profit margins can be fulfilled If you want to show you care for our children Create peace not war and retribution Its easier than you think - just love Jesus would expect it if you truly believed him And if you don't no one would be surprised Every one of us knows you lie As you stand, the figurehead of our nation Don't pretend we support your devastation You don't speak for us for we are eloquent You don't speak for us for we are intelligent We are open and honest we care about the world To save the planet we would give up our oil We need leadership that understands No child left behind with out a hand To help them up to help them through To hand over a world worth being born into Don't forget the children that are far ahead The ones who can over through governments The ones who can see through and be the change Those are the children you can not chain They are the ones who need us most To live and love like we know the cost To be peaceful to show no fear We're all gonna die don't make us appear Like we care more for our bodies than we do for our souls Like we want money more than we want to be whole To be human to be alive to be free Simply put just let us be Us and them and them and us were all the same - a lesson in love Are we Americans or American'ts Will we give up without taking a stand Is our country free like we've been told Or have you already sold it? Flip flotsam Flotsam flip Take this treasure turned to shit And fashion it to life again Recycle reuse I know we can I choose to believe I know there's a way To wake up to a brand new day To celebrate the good we've got And share with those who've not

Mr. President, I would like to express to you the shame that has been building up inside of me For the last 6 years of your bullshit presidency. I can see right through your guiltless eyes that pretend to cry For the cameras each and every time a U.S. soldier has died. And they're dyin' for some crazy ass lies That you been spitting at us for way too much time. I get sick watching you speak, watching you breathe, Breathe lies and lies and lies down the folk of this great nation's throat, Hoping our spirit will be so broke That we would never think of getting up and fighting Fists raised in the air, every culture uniting To stop the dyin and the lyin' and all the compromising And we'll all talk of peace and we'll all talk of love, And we'll all talk of bringing home the soldiers before their time is up. I refuse to let my generation look the other way, There are too many causes to fight for in this day and age. But you're doing a great job, keeping our minds off the important shit, Workin' us to the bone, so all we care about is gettin' lit. But we got to work so hard, so young Cause we know our social security is gonna be all gone! But I gotta keep the faith that the people will stand strong And not let you tell us you're right, and we're wrong. People are born to love and taught to hate And George, you've bred the people pretty well to date. But not for long, your time is running out. People are getting anxious and they're on to what you're all about. They may be six years too late, but better late than never Maybe we won't be stuck in Iraq forever. Maybe you'll care about the environment and stop its demise, Maybe you'll admit the weapons of mass destruction were a lie. Maybe you'll care about the homeless on our streets, And give 'em some money and a little food to eat. And it would be awesome if you started stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, Instead of giving your rich friends more money than they can account for. And it would be my absolute dream to see these things come true, But I've come to terms with the fact that it's not gonna be due to you. So I'll keep talkin' my shit about your crappy politics, And I'll take deep breaths when you get us into situations that you just can't fix, And I will frustratingly hold my breath and wait, 'Til Mrs. Clinton's inauguration date. Sincerely and With Love, Madison

Dear Mr. President: In some way, I almost feel I should thank you. They say that nothing worth achieving comes easily, and you sure are putting up plenty of obstacles on the world’s path towards peace, compassion, and justice. There’s some comfort in knowing that once this vision is realized, it’ll have staying power because we had to go through so much to get there. After September 11, I felt the profound potential of that moment—a time unlike any other in the history of humanity, when the entire world stood by this country’s side, consoling us as a dear friend would stand graveside while we mourned a beloved parent. But instead of extending the compassionate possibilities of that sacred moment, you pushed our dear friends into the dirt, spit in their faces, and told them that if they didn’t join us in kicking the shit out of someone—anyone—they might as well have murdered our loved ones themselves. Thanks to you, humanity must now take the long way around in our evolution as a species. The very, very long way around. And it gets longer each day we remain in Iraq, each time you beat the drums of war at Iran and Syria, each time you wave the flag of “terrorism” to justify shredding the Constitution you have sworn to uphold—a victory this country’s enemies could not possibly accomplish as thoroughly and efficiently as you yourself are handing them. Have you no eyes to see, Mr. President? No ears to hear the cries of the people you were elected to serve? No humility to conceive that your plans might be failing? I simply cannot understand your unflagging bravado in the face of overwhelming evidence that your policies are leading to increasing misery, both at home and abroad. Even Jesus expressed uncertainty about his path—and in his case, the only life he was risking, the only sacrifice he was asking, was his own. Not thousands of soldiers and hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians sent to senseless deaths. Are you more sure of yourself than even Jesus was? Can your arrogance extend that far? But I’m a hopeful person, Mr. President. I believe it isn’t too late for this country or for this world. No, nothing worth achieving comes easily. You’re making us work hard for a world based in love rather than fear, lived in connection rather than isolation, and embraced in its beautiful fullness rather than sliced into bland uniformity. Ever since this war started, I haven’t been able to stomach “fighting back” in protest. Peace can’t come about through the language of war, just as you can’t “defend freedom” by trying to silence your critics. So whenever people gather to speak out against the war, I don’t shout in anger. Instead, I hand out peace haiku: 17-syllable reminders that our common humanity is the best long-term defense against our common destruction. Here are a few of my favorites: Supporting the troops Means bringing them back alive, Not in body bags. History records The art as well as the war – These lines, my small peace. There’s no joy in death, Whatever the corpses’ names – I name them Human. Lies, lies, and more lies – Have you no shame, Mr. Bush? At long last, no shame? It’s your move, Mr. President. Will you use your power to move this world closer to justice and peace? Or will your hubris continue placing obstructions in our way? I urge you to choose wisely. In peace, Lindasusan

Dear Mr. President, Life ain’t nothin but a bitch. There’s no better way of puttin it. I remember the days before you came along We were so happy. We were free. Life wasn’t so creepy. You could raise a family and not always have to be Thinking about, in your mind, the end of human kind. The end of it all. That ain’t no way for a child to grow up You make me want to throw up Yea, my life Mr. President, sure is a bitch. It sucks to be me, Mr. President Yea, it sucks to be me The only hope I can see is to join the Army And get health insurance and maybe get out of debt They say our kids will get the finest education in the land I just need a job, don’t you understand? This is the only job I could land Yea life, Mr. President, is a bitch. There’s no better way of puttin it. Today my husband told me That the Bears are going to the Super Bowl We’re gonna have a party I just hope those Bears don’t plan To go to the North Pole It isn’t there any more But that’s OK I’ll just watch football all day What can I do anyway? Cause Life Ain’t Nothin Life Ain’t Nothin Life Ain’t Nothin, but a bitch! There’s no better way of putting it. Kate

Dear Mr President, Having now discussed the Iraq war conflict with concerned citizens living here and abroad many times over, I am now engaged in an internal debate over all ideas presented to me. Some have suggested not only that we as Americans live in a bubble of selfishness, self-deceit, and denial, but also that we have alienated ourselves from the rest of the world in creating our protection bubbles, those of fight the enemy over there or fight them here, and fight and kill now so someday we might not have to, and that all the daily killing we engage in might be unnecessary. Others have pointed to our centuries long history of killing innocent civilians, women and children, and defenseless old people alike in the names of freedom and democracy being actions which haven't really earned us a reputation as a nation whose words and ideals match our actions and intentions, that perhaps a nation who talks excitedly as we do about freedom and democracy, that these words somehow don't match our history of attempted genocide, slavery, and war. I say true visionaries stand alone. During Y2K, a few television networks voted Hitler as most important man of the 20th century. It isn't easy for some folks to understand that we must sometimes kill honest and innocent civialins to set them free from this terrible and cruel world, to kill some so that others may life. And while some view our brave deeds of securing the homeland from threats and terror and evil as selfless and noble, others say we have paved a trail of hypocracy and fear. Personally, I view our long standing policies of kill or be killed, and eye for an eye, as healthy and instinctual manifestations of the primal natures of our animal being. To have and want more than we can hold, to kill those who might have what we need, or those who might kill us in the future, is natural basic instinct. Why not kill them first before they can grow old enough to someday think about killing us? So I now praise and thank you Mr. President for your brave defense of our motherland against all odds and harsh critique, and also for your cherishing of that most sacred and precious institution, that of human life. My knowledge of science is limited, but I must ask, since obtaining the scientifically paramount embryonic stem cells from fetuses is simply not an option, those same ones necessary for the advancement of our fight against disease and cancer, would it be somehow be feasable to borrow them from the dead women and children in Iraq, since they won't be needing them anymore? There's got to be plenty just lying around in the streets, to save more Americans? Also, how much would it cost to build a giant wall around the whole country, or maybe a giant plastic bubble, like the one in Atlantis, to protect our paradise, and maybe build more golf courses? Per Z

Dear Mr President, Give me your ear I have something to tell you You may not want to hear The nation is pissed at you We can't understand How you can bald face lie to us And murder our men If there were a valid reason For your actions thus far We might be behind you But you aren't up to par Take heed Mr. President Your time has come to cease We are not a nation for warfare We're a nation longing for peace Take care of the nation That entrusted their fate To the hands of man That we have begun to hate Dear haughty President Don't look so smug Think of how God looks on you As a mere little thug Your time is very limited So take heed of what you do The hangman's noose is waiting Like Sadam's fate ... you lose You were so afraid He might stand too tall To show the world who you are By the same noose you will fall Like Sadam in his last moments Could you be so brave? With a noose round your neck You would snivel and beg! by Penny

Dear Mr. President, As the war in Iraq drags on with no end in sight, I write to you to ask for a change. A change in the way you push your values on others. A change in the way that you decide what is a priority for America. A change in the way you govern. Whereas you currently want to send more soldiers to kill & be killed Whereas you seek to cut programs that help impoverished Americans Whereas you twist and distort the facts to suit your own agenda Whereas you are willing to stomp on the very values that define us I write to ask for a change. I seek no change in the number of troops we have at war - unless it is changed to zero. I seek no change in your beliefs - unless you continue to force them upon others. I seek no change in our budget ?- if it actually seeks to help all Americans I seek no change in our leadership - as long as they begin to act like leaders. But, I write to ask for a change. A change - End this hurtful partisan bickering that is tearing our nation to shreds A change - End the tax cuts to the wealthy who need no more, and give to the hungry & sick A change - End this illegal war of aggression and offer real help to the people we have harmed A change - End the immature games that you and your ilk are playing while our nation circles the drain. It's about being a leader. It's about growing up. It's about putting others before yourself. It's about change. Sincerely, Jeremy

Dear Mr. President; I am writing this letter as a "concerned neighbour" from Canada who is very fearful in the way that your administration has handled itself since "winning" the election in 2000. So fearful am I that I will not consider having any children until the current state of affairs in the world improves dramatically. Rather than leading the United States in a positive and peaceful manner, it appears that you have gone down a drastic and dangerous path that has not only killed thousands of innocent victims worldwide, but you have destroyed thousands of American families by putting soldiers in harms way without the adequate protection, means, or strategy to keep them safe and bring them home alive and unharmed. The hatred brewing world-wide towards American presence poses a danger to us all and I think that your administration should spend the rest of your time in office mending these bridges that have been broken and spend all your energy and resources in fixing the hurt that has been caused rather than by inflicting more pain and suffering. I am not writing to criticize or condemn your actions, but rather suggest that NOW IS THE TIME TO MOVE FORWARD WITH A POSITIVE AND LOVING STYLE OF LEADERSHIP. I ask you to be more conscious, more compassionate, more caring and find the inner strength to lead with more tolerance. What kind of legacy do you want to leave? 3100 + American troops killed. Countless injured and scarred for life. Hundreds of thousands innocent Iraqi's killed, displaced and families torn apart by American intervention. This is not the way to lead, live or be. Please I beg you, do whatever you can to fix the damage done. Please wake-up every morning and listen to Michael Franti and Spearheads "Stay Human" and/or "Yell Fire", do yoga, BREATHE, and find the peace and compassion within yourself to stop the war in Iraq, close Guatanamo, disband the C.I.A. and please hear these words: "YOU CAN BOMB THE WORLD INTO PIECES, BUT YOU CAN'T BOMB THE WORLD INTO PEACE." (Michael Franti) One Love. Paul Citizen of the World Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Dear Mr. President, I would like to point out some similarities between the war in Iraq and the genocide occurring in Sudan Africa and other African nations not yet widely covered by the media; Chad, Sri Lanka, Uganda, etc. After coming to a firm decision concerning weapons of mass destruction and declaring Suddam a murderous dictator and an extreme threat to humanity leading to the termination of his life, I am asking you, with all of the compassion of a just and loving human being, to consider the atrocities against humanity occurring in Dafur, Sudan and neighboring Chad. Sir, it is increasingly evident every day that the woman, young girls, children and men will continue to be raped and tortured at the hands of rebels who are funded by and joined in the slaughter by it’s own Sudanese government. Loving Abraham Lincoln the way I do, I often wonder how amazing presidents of past would react to these harsh, global, blatant violent acts against humanity. I would like to believe Mr. Lincoln would address the issue of genocide much like he did slavery, even faced with the prospect of a civil war and a nation divided. Please, Mr. President, use the ability you have to help these people. Their existence depends on intervention; it is the right thing to do. Sincerely yours in love and peace, Angela LaVelle

Dear Mr. President, I am so thankful to have been born and raised in the United States of America. As the leader of this country, you are in a unique position to shape and maintain the future of the world. We in the United States have been at the apex of cultural influence in the world since our country's founding. The very foundation of our country is based on the democratic ideal of a government of, by and for the people. As president, you have the great responsibility to protect those ideals upon which we were founded. Personally, I don't know if I would be a good president, as the responsibilities of the position are too great for many people, including myself to fathom. As you finish out your tenure as leader of the free world, there are some things that you should consider. Your legacy will not only be the condition of the country while you were in office, but also how your policies helped shape the future of the United States and the world. I believe that there is still time to institute policies that will help the world to survive through all of the turmoil that has been beset upon us through the years. I believe that your legacy should not be one in which you are remembered for a quagmire in the Middle East, the destruction of the middle class in the United States, or rampant partisanship in our governing bodies. Your legacy to the world can literally be...THE WORLD. In your most recent address to Congress regarding the State of the Union, you acknowledged global warming for the first time that I can remember. That is a great first step. What you need to do now, is challenge the American people to lead the world in changing the way we interact with the earth. Fossil fuels are not the cure, they are the disease that is ravaging our planet. I currently live in Colorado, and cannot imagine passing down to my future children a world that is any less beautiful than what we have now. Despite the hatred that many countries feel for our nation at this point in our history, we are still looked upon as the most influential group of people on earth. It is our responsibility to use this influence to convince people to save the very planet upon which we live. An important first step is for the United States to sign the Kyoto treaty, and make moves to limit, and one day completely stop the use of fossil fuels. We can go even further by stopping the destruction of the natural world that is so important in the very survival of the human race. You can urge recycling of resources, responsible practices by our nation's food suppliers, and responsible practices by our nations corporations. If our nation rises to the forefront of this global battle on the environment, other nations will follow our lead. If they don't, then we have at least, as the #1 contributor of pollution in the WORLD, done our part. Thank You. Douglas

Dear President, I write to support your admirable commitment to "lead the world to victory" in the war against terrorism. I endorse your call for "a broad and sustained campaign" against the "terrorist organizations and those who harbor and support them." I agree with Secretary of State Powell that the United States must find and punish the perpetrators of the horrific attack of September 11, and we must, as he said, "go after terrorism wherever we find it in the world" and "get it by its branch and root." I agree with the Secretary of State that U.S. policy must try not only at finding the people responsible for this incident, but must also locate and destroy all those "other groups out there that mean us no good" and "that have conducted attacks previously against U.S. personnel, U.S. interests and our allies." I support all and any beatings given to the Taliban.I agree that a key goal, but by no means the only goal, of the current war on terrorism should be to capture or kill Osama bin Laden, and to destroy his network of associates. To this end, I support the necessary military action in Afghanistan and the provision of substantial financial and military assistance to the anti-Taliban forces in that country. Even know you can come off a little bit stupid Mr President, I don't think anyone else could cancel the war without getting us in bigger trouble. As far as I am concerned, do whatever the fuck you have to do to take down these mother fuckers. Normally I am a no war kinda woman but when these MF start blowing up our World Trade Centers with my friends in it I get really mad. Much Respect President Bush, ONE LOVE, Jean

Dear President Bush, My name is Diane, and I am a graduate student at the University of Maine School of Social Work. I am 33 years old, and have been an active voter since age 18. I, like you, love being a United States citizen, and am thankful for my freedoms that I enjoy from being born here. I, like you, love the coast of Maine. Unlike you, however, I believe that our "war on terror" is a war that cannot be won. On the evening of January 26th, five buses left from Maine filled with concerned citizens. We were a diverse group; our ages, ethnicities, professions, and political parties were varied, but we were all joined together on this bus for a common cause... to let Congress know that we do not support a "surge" in troops to Iraq. We drove through the night, to unite. We were in united in our voices, and in our spirits (Spearits!) I was in Washington D.C. on January 27, with a few hundred thousand other people, to let Congress know how we felt about the continued occupation of Iraq. I know that the press said there were far fewer people there. As I turned around and looked behind me, down Capitol Hill, I could see only people... the crowd was a flowing sea of people before me, and behind me, as far as my eyes could see. I heard you were in town that day... though I know you didn't hear the reverberation of our voices down Pennsylvania Avenue through the bulletproof glass on your windows. I feel like for your entire presidency, your ears have been shut. I understand that the job of President of the United States is a challenging one... being "the decider" is difficult, and the pressure to make decisions weighs heavy. I would like to remind you though, that you are not “the decider”. You are a public servant. I believe that you have forgotten this. You have not served us (the U.S.!) and you have not served our global community either. If you had, your ears, eyes, mind, and heart would be open to what we are saying, and what we have been saying, since the first objections to your preemptive war were raised. President's day is fast approaching. I'd like to ask you, "What is the legacy that you wish to leave as the President of the United States of America?" As it stands now, I am ashamed, disgusted, mortified, and embarrassed by the actions my government has taken in my name, under your leadership. As the occupation of Iraq continues, the deaths are climbing higher. Billions of dollars are being spent, and for what? We are less safe now than before, our "war on terror" has backfired, and our presence is creating more "terrorists". The time is now to admit that a tremendous mistake has been made, and start bringing our troops home. It takes a leader of courage and wisdom to admit that they have been wrong, and to attempt to rectify their mistakes. There is an U.S. Army Lieutenant, Ehren Watada, who is currently facing court martial and prison for his refusal to go to Iraq. He decided that as a leader of men, it was important for him to refuse to fight in this illegal and immoral war. Ehren Watada is a man of courage, and does not deserve to go to prison... he deserves to be pardoned... you could learn much from his courageous action. I beg you to open your eyes, open your ears, open your mind, and open your heart. Our loved ones are dying in Iraq, because of your decisions. I know I cannot convince you of the value of life of the untold number of Iraqi citizens who have died. If you truly honor the lives of our soldiers, however, you will bring them home. Peace, Diane

To President George W. Bush: W ~ Why must there be so much death and destruction? You believe in a world without any future. Code Green! We need a world of solutions, sustainable solutions. Think solar, think windmills, permaculture and organics. It’s fantastic; it’s cleaning up the vortex of plastic. W ~ Why are you campaigning for more nuclear power? While Chernobyl still burns deep into the earth, it is far from efficient. You seem to thrive on disasters. Code Green! Nuclear is not a solution of any kind. W ~ I know you don’t want a cure for your profitable war, your war that kills, maims, and promotes torture. Your war is based on greed; you are worse than the Once-ler. I know you’re in bed with the fat, greedy corporations, scraping the cream off the top of a system fed with lies and deception. W ~ This world is not yours to destroy. The children of the earth have plans of their own, plans to leave something of value to generations to come, a story of how they overcame the dark days of madness. W ~ The world cannot wait for your small minded non-sight. We must create our own bright possibilities; how ‘bout a planet with electric cars, one with human rights and respect, one with clean air and water, real food, and the ability to breath deep and full? W ~ Whether reptilian or mammalian your soulless actions cause such negative karma which harms not only you, but the whole world as well. I pray for your soul. W ~ What I ache for in my heart of hearts is the promise of beautiful possibilities. The world I see shines with happy, healthy brothers and sisters full of purpose and direction; a world of bounty where nature, uninterrupted, provides its creatures with safety and abundance. Love, unbound, can heal the world and all sentient beings. W ~ We really are all one, we’re all interconnected. What you do to the world, you do to yourself. I wonder when you’re in bed all alone, late at night, in your finest of silks, do you feel the pain of what you’ve created? Can you feel the fear of the ones with no homes, no beds, no warmth or protection? Can you feel the anger and anguish of parents who have lost a child for no reason? I pray for a worldwide healing. W ~ I have a wish for the world; that all could experience the immaculate love vibration which threads all of our hearts together in the web of life. Once this is realized, there will be no more need for greed, for war, or for destruction. Once this is realized we will have a chance for peace. Charmaine, Citizen of the World

Dear Mr. President: Ashamed. I am ashamed. Ashamed to be an American. Ashamed. America the beautiful, powerful and free, beacon of light to the world, This is not the America I see. We are the cause of death and destruction, of lives torn apart across the world. We flaunt our irresponsible environmental practices, doing nothing to clean up our home. We speak of democracy, but force our way at every turn, and refuse to listen to debate. We are a nation of hypocrites and bullies, led by greed and hungry for power. Starting wars is wrong. Profit before people is wrong. Turning our backs on those in need is wrong. Leaving the earth a mess for others to clean up is wrong. Lying is wrong. Hiding the truth is wrong. Ruling by fear is wrong. America is wrong. I am ashamed; I do not know what to do. But something can be done. Please Mr. President, stop and reflect. Reflect on this world we are creating for the next generation. We currently have the ability to make the world we want. We won't always have this power. Now is the time for us to act. We can commit to a true international peace force, the next stage of the United Nations, practicing real democracy by respecting other nations and working together on all issues. We can acknowledge the military-industrial-prison complex we have created, working to transform it into new directions to serve humanity. We can act as environmental stewards and examples for the world, cleaning up past mistakes and developing sustainable practices for all to follow. We can invest in our own people, our best resource, rebuilding New Orleans as a first step, then providing genuine education and health care for all of us. We are capable of so much more than short term power grabs and get rich quick schemes. This isn't an action against business - but we need a strong courageous leader to point business in the right direction. To direct us all towards our highest potential. To make America an authentic world leader. Help me be not ashamed. Help me believe I am proud to be an American. Kathleen

| Oh, George.
Look at what you have done. Some lies. Some secrets. Some greed. Some death. Oh, George. Could you bear it? If it were your family, could you bear
it? George, America's power does not come from our troops or our mighty war
budget. Oh George. |

Dear President Bush, I consider it my duty to write you this note as a concerned patriot and human being living through these troubling times. I do so with a heavy heart and worried mind... my soul yearns for a mass healing for all of our people who suffer by the hand and policy of Democracy American Style under your leadership. Mr. Bush, I beg of you to take this time to reflect upon your role as the Leader of the Free World. I recall your words shortly after September 11, 2001... the action undertaken to fight terrorism around the globe is the "... first great war of the 21st Century". These are at the least a poor choice of words, which seem to not recognize the impact of such a statement coming from a world leader. Coupled with other statements you issued; most famously... "Bring 'em On!" is it surprising we people who value respectful and healthy relations with our brothers and sisters doubt your intentions as our president? Have you not examined the world political climate under which so much hostility and distrust exists toward the United States government? I recall only weeks before 9/11/01 there was a World Conference on Racism. At this conference we walked away from the conference table in support of Israel as the desparate conditions of the Palestinians were being considered. I also recall under your leadership we have backed away from meaningful measures to deal with air-borne pollutants, and to aid in the clean up of unexploded land mines around the globe. Mr. Bush; if you or your chosen negotiators are not willing to talk over the table of reasonable discussion and debate, then where does the rest of the world go to be heard? For some desparate few violence in the streets and the market place is their sad choice. I believe, you and your followers are wrong to say these desparate people hate Freedom. Their hatred is born out of frustration and contempt for our foreign policy and the American companies that conduct business under the premiss of 'we do it because we can'. People around the globe have simply lost patience with this bullying approach to issues concerning their part of the world. Furthermore, it is time we Americans grew up to the fact that much of the 'blood, sweat and tears' keeping our nation great today are contributed by people all across the globe. In summary President Bush; our government and corporate leaders would be making a timely and honorable move to go back to the table for talks on many issues of gobal impact. We citizens can better express our patriotism by what we do to better the United States of America; rather than by contributing to the suffering of others around the globe who only desire a better life for them and those they love. One significant measure we all can take is to contribute a small amount of time, energy or funds to relieve the suffering of our own people who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. You, Mr. Bush, could spearhead such an effort by offering one of your 'tax credit plans' to those who undertake such a noble and positive effort. Clearly, it is a different time we all live in today. I see the challenge now is to better our relationships worldwide, and I see we have only a small window of opportunity to do this. This would best be done I believe, by first reflecting on and then enhancing our likeness'; rather than by pointing out and dwelling upon our differences. Mr. Bush please open this Window of Opportunity... take the risk of correcting some past judgements and see to it our country, The United States of America, lives up to it's great promise of 230 years ago. See to it our nation pursues the path of opportunity instead of opportunism around the globe. With Hope and good Faith, Charles

Mistah President, This is letter is to you and to all of those individuals who assist you in articulating your thoughts and making decisions that have affected millions of people. I am writing this letter for myself, my children and most importantly, for all those individual souls who cannot express their thoughts because they are suffering or are unable to move through this world with a sense of safety. I am a mother, a teacher and I work to be an agent of change. I will not stand idle and leave a legacy of despair for my children. I will not teach my children to fear or hate. When my son asks "Why are people being killed?" I answer simply, "ignorance." Mistah President, There are some things in life that cannot be fixed through violence and hate. Compassion and faith are the tools of reconstruction, not weapons and bombs, secret plans and more troops. If you look closely at the people in the world you live in, you might be surprised. My son has no interest in war or killing. He will not be a soldier in any war. My daughter is not compliant. She is twelve years old and she does not trust our government that masks fear with terror. She understands that bombs cannot exterminate "ISMS", only people can. She is a powerful one and she is ready to step up. So, Mistah President, There is a new generation and they have arrived. Please do not misunderstand me or put me in a box. I am not a generation Xer, an old hippie, or a liberal elitist. I grew up during Viet Nam and if anything my generation was complacent. You know that better than anyone. I watched the TV numbly as the news clips scanned body bags being lifted from the killing fields. And I said never again. I will not teach to that kind of numbness. Look closely because there are many of us: mothers, fathers, teachers, students, children, artists, musicians, those without homes and those who live in privilege. Listen carefully to the what we are saying: no more lies, no more ignorance, no more slippery words. We stand together now and we see you clearly. Pull back, bring them home and leave us alone so we can love our world.Deanna Alexich y mi familia, Esteban Anais and Daniel

Time For A Change I'm sick and tired of the corporation spreading their poison all cross the nation. Burning the earth and tainting the air, and when asked they just don't care. As long as there is profit everything is square, if you ask me that's just not fair. They take the fur off the animals back, cut down a tree to make a gun rack, they use the rack to hold their guns, which in turn kill another nation's sons. Ask the president, when it will end, I don't want anymore troops to be sent. He can't answer, so he lies, and while he does this more soldiers die. There must be a reason for all this turmoil, it can't just be a war for oil, and as I rack my brain for the answer I need, it hits me, it's just the rich man's greed. This is the cause for these deadly deeds. So Mr. President it's no surprise that you try to cover this country's eyes. Soon the masses will know this is just Vietnam, thirty years later, plus one Saddam. Earl

A Letter To The President 5th February 2007 By Lydia 14yrs) from Bishop’s Stortford, England. Mr. Bush give the Iraq’s back their voice Your argument back is that you have no choice You have information, so bombs are sent up to the sky In a land where peace is something the people are denied Keeping all your soldiers out there, suffering day and night Making them shoot guns they don’t want to shoot, and fights they don’t want to fight. You’re not in Iraq fighting the war You’re not volunteering to help the sick and poor. Soldiers out there, being forced to have blood on there hands While you sit in the White House, shouting demands So, Mr. Bush tell me the statistic fraction Of how many soldiers die each day in action Think about the soldier’s families and how they’re feeling Soldiers robbed of memories they should have had, that you’re stealing Tomorrow’s a new day, and you can make a change To stop the soldiers in Iraq, you can have that arranged Tell them to all put down their weapons, as there is no divide Skin colour or religion doesn’t matter, because its all about what’s inside Because the sun can shine again in the Middle East If you bring back the peace.

Mr. President: As I sit to write this letter I realize I don't know where to begin. My complaints about your administration are so lengthy that I must censor myself before I stop writing only to discover a book with numerous volumes on the table before me. I am aware of your proud proclamation that you do not read newspapers because the columns are tangled with opinions interwoven between statements of fact, so I deduce you would be appalled to read a book of such material. After all, there are numerous books with enlightening material such as the story of an alienated, unreflecting, unapologetic individual who kills an Arab with excessive force. Yes, this is the type of book that is perfect before you come up with "The New Way Forward" in Iraq. Because I care so deeply about your sentiments, I will not ask that you read a book. Instead, I will focus on topics you profess to care so deeply about; Democracy, Terror, and Peace. Democracy. Now, call me crazy, but I'm not sure the best way to bring democracy to a country is to increase the troop levels in a continued occupation that 82% of its citizens condemn (Washington Post). However, the ability of your idiocy to outdo itself never fails. Not only do you profess that American combat forces are in Iraq to spread democracy, but you blame Iraqis for your administration's failure to curb the secretarian violence. I read, and I'm sorry to quote the Washington Post a newspaper that is probably biased, that, "Witnesses to the slaying of 24 Iraqi civilians by U.S. Marines in the western town of Haditha say the Americans shot men, women and children at close range in retaliation for the death of a Marine lance corporal in a roadside bombing" (Washington Post). The only thing I could think of was, "Damn, if only those women and children had stood up to fight for freedom and democracy they could have been saved." Terror. In terms of terror I cannot understand how you have succeeded in getting a large percentage of the public worried about terrorism. After all, the chance of being killed by international terrorism is almost equivalent to the chance of being killed by an asteroid 1 in 80,000 and lord knows how much I worry about those asteroids. Perhaps addressing real concerns such as increasing health care opportunities and combating climate change would be worthwhile. Peace. I wonder who the world believes is the greatest threat to world peace. According to a recent European poll Israel ranks first, and the US is a close second tied with Iran and North Korea. Just to restate we are tied with Iran and North Korea and our closest ally in the Middle East, Israel, is at the top of the list. Didn't we provide Israel with the cluster bombs they dropped on civilian populations of Lebanon? No bother, it's just a WAR CRIME. To conclude let me just say that I believe your priorities are truly misguided. I'm not sure if you actually believe in what you do, or if you are laughing all the way to the bank as you propose a new budget favorable to defense contractors and corporations who contribute so much with their lobby. All I know is that I hope for change. Here are a few suggestions. End the Occupation, new regulations to end media consolidation, increase taxes on corporate profits, negotiate cheaper drug prices, environmental action, unilateral negotiations with North Korea and Iran, agree to an international criminal court, reform prison system, decriminalize marijuana, and free health care for veterans. Sincerely, Eric

Dear Mr. Bush, What is different between you and Saddam? Not so much. As him, you are a dictator: you serve as a president even though you were not elected. So, as a dictator, you should be “removed”, the same way. The world would be safer. So, I would like you to be prosecuted in the system you have put in place. First I propose to send you to a jail in Afghanistan to get 'questioned'. You’ll seat in a nice plane with a CIA logo on it. You even have a chance to see Italy, on the way. Once you’ll be there, I supposed after a couple of day of serious questioning, you may be able to tell us interesting stories, no doubt about it. If you survive, we may send you then to Guantanamo for a wile, see how things are for you. You will have no rights, no layer and we wont show you evidence and proof we have against you. What’s the point of doing that, because you are guilty, you have no rights and you want be able to defend yourself. Then, a popular tribunal will be set up. We'll try to have representatives from different countries: parents of soldiers who died in Iraq, parent of soldiers who died in Afghanistan, Iranian, black American, Latinos American, Iraqis,.... Once you’ll be found guilty, we’ll send you to Iraq. They have good way to sentence people....Remember a guy called Saddam. You are a criminal who deserve ten times more than Saddam. You have killed more people. You are going to be hang!!! Hopefully some people will be able to take pictures and movies on mobile phone. You wont know but you will be the next star on Youtube.... Good luck mate. Thomas

Only Human: Mr. President, I won’t criticize your war but know that I don’t approve. I won’t question your legitimacy of office or the integrity of you foreign policy but know that I have given it great thought. No, Mr. President, I want to talk about our relationship. Your distance is apparent and you hardly acknowledge me, I can’t even remember the last time we made love. You make it hard but I’ll admit, you are not the only one at fault. I have my own short-comings. For example, when was the last time that I really put forth an effort to get your attention? Sometimes I feel like all I do is yell and scream. When that doesn’t work I resign myself to grumble with friends around the water cooler. But you make it so hard on me, and after all, I’m only human. Wait, only human? Why am I saying that? Only human... only the most capable species that we know of on this planet. Why, I have the ability to reason, to make informed decisions, and above all to act on them. Why is it that I have succumbed to such complacency? - I am not only human. I can get up and I can yell and I can scream and when that doesn’t work I can try something else. Why has it taken me so long to realize that I don’t need to follow your lead Mr. President. I am my own man, equal to and just as capable as you. Where you have congress, I have the youth, and at least one middle aged hippie (who by the way is in a pretty cool band, you should check out their new CD called “Yell Fire”). It’s time we stood on our own two feet. Thank you for showing us that. It’s time we became the greater visions of ourselves that we all aspire to. Sometimes when I complain about you, people look at me funny. They say things like “but he is so good to you, think about what you would lose if you moved out.” Well, Mr. President, it’s not always about me and I’ve about had enough of you and your land. I’m going to take me and my youth and emigrate. Who knows where we’ll go but I’m putting down that rifle you gave me last Christmas. All I’m bringing with me is a flower in one hand and a spade in the other. We’ll see who the neighbors like better then. So, Mr. President by the time this letter reaches you I’ll be gone and the kids are coming with me. Don’t feel to bad, you did give me a few great years and I’ve had a lot of fun. But it’s time I move on. I can’t simply rely on you for everything, I need to stand up by myself. Mr. President, I’m leaving this for you on the kitchen table. Dinner is in the fridge, you can warm it yourself. Harrison

Dear President Bush, I commend you for the No Child Left Behind Act and the American Competitiveness Initiative. In my opinion, the next step for education is to focus on current events. Having recently graduated from high school and college, I found the only major shortcoming of our high schools is a lack of political education. Recent history and current events are not available in the most high schools in our countries. As a result, my generation is not aware of international challenges, such as food and energy security, and what this means for citizens of the world’s superpower. Democracy is useless if the people are clueless. I recommend that a background be given on relationships between countries, international resources, and the vast majority of the world’s population. This could replace outdated 19 th and 20 th century history in high school curricula. The possibility of political confrontation is no reason to avoid debates. Representatives of various groups could present their ideas in class as I have done for Engineers without Borders. Open discussion teaches tolerance, awareness, and critical thinking. If youth see the current relationship between themselves, their government, lobby groups, and the media, they will be more likely to act constructively in society. If every North American adapted their lifestyle to respect all people and resources, the next generation may inherit a habitable world. The first step is awareness of the status quo. It is in the best interest of the country to raise informed citizens, especially in a fast changing, globally connected world. I am interested in how your administration is planning to address current events curricula, and what other plans you might have for education. If you have no influence on this matter, please suggest the office I should contact. Yours truly, Kealan

To Mister Bush- Chapter 1: How to be a Better President 1. Tell the factories to put their filters back on. 2. Let man and man and woman and woman marry eachother. 3. Don't drill for oil in Antarctica and Alaska. 4. Don't cut down nature to build new cities. There are enough cities already. 5. A bunch of people say that you are a bad president, so follow these rules to help you become a better president. Chapter 2: Short Poem You are not the best president But you are not the worst. Use more peace And be a better president. Sincerely, Ben

ADMIT YOUR GUILT: Its time to admit your guilt Regardless, of what you felt When you told everybody time will tell And the world gave you room to seal the deal You were wrong, but you quickly turned the wheels When the facts that we had they were concealed Or suppressed by the men who could reveal What we needed most, to help us heal You chose to ignore the truth You lied to the youth to get recruits To sign on the line, to fight your muse More military equals more armored troops. But the proof is in the pudding and we all got duped Used your power and deceit to corrupt our views You harvested this war, what has it produced? A lot of vegetables wearing size 12 boots Maybe we should send you, to fight your war We'll be generous providing tank and air support You'll have night vision goggles to see in the dark And a tent to keep you cozy when the night brings warmth You're going to need special protection and adaptive skills When the desert strikes you hard, as I'm sure it will If you're lucky you will live and have a story to sell At least you'll understand the pain many soldiers felt But when the soldiers fell, due to your mistakes Did you cry? Did you even blink an eye? Did you care? This is mother fucking warfare Tearing families apart in Baghdad and Bellaire AND WE DIDN'T EVEN ELECT YOU, My anger may radiate deep inside my brain and veins But you stole an election and for that I feel shame Then Katrina came, I'M AN AMERICAN AND MAKE NO MISTAKE But our president's a whore, he fucks us every day He's selling freedom, while he's handcuffing the poor Who need the freedom to be, believe and maybe be more I recognize life may be hard, but this is wrong I had to say it in this poem held tight in my palm Sometimes I feel I've said too much. Am I a bore? I'm listening yall. Do you want to hear more? DO YOU WANT TO HEAR MORE? Can you blame me for my anger? We started a civil war But I protested in Chicago before our troops were deployed Maybe Bush played with GI Joes when he was a boy Human beings aren't toys, they'll get fucking destroyed You might like my poem or you might be fucking annoyed But I'm pissed. Does our constitution even exist? Maybe it was written in invisible ink And the Bush's got a hold of it to make a profit By filling in the blanks, like we know that they did When they didn't even ask for competitive bids They just gave them out as gifts, to their favorite friends And blame Bill Clinton for our problems cause he likes getting head But one day they'll burn in hell, with the devil and shit Next to Hitler, Paris Hilton, and the man you call Dick Cause the damage you've caused, the way you've broken our laws I don't want your applause, I want him locked behind bars. - by Al

Dear Mr. President- I am well acquainted with your affinity for the English language. It must be an extraordinary challenge to live wholly in the relentless eye of the American public, but you’ve got to ignore the media’s ongoing banter and sarcastic quips. They’re just jealous of you, Mr. President. I want you to know that your noble quest for impeccable grammatical and technical elements is not lost on me, Sir. As such, I feel compelled to share with you several recent readings that I found intriguing. Here you go, President Bush: 1. Peace n. - harmony; concord. Serenity, calm, or quiet. You know, like our ongoing “peace effort” in Iraq - the one that commenced directly after you stood atop the Aircraft Carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and declared the “end of major combat operations in Iraq.” I’ll bet our boys and girls overseas couldn’t agree with you more. I’m sure they appreciate the tranquility of Iraq’s night sky, sliced only by the occasional thump and whistle of an incoming mortar round. 2. Truth n. - reality; actual existence. Correctness; accuracy. Hmm. That’s interesting, don’t you think? It reminds me of your accuracy in predicting the actual existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Or your correctness in early 2003 when you suggested that the war effort in Iraq would be “swift.” I couldn’t have put it better myself, Sir. 3. Insane adj. - repeating the same actions over again and expecting different results. It’s a good thing that you’ve been so diligent in overhauling policy and strategically revising plans on the ground in Iraq. It’s wise to have a few cards tucked up the sleeve when one gambles. Sure, you’re using people and I prefer poker chips but, hey, what happens in Vegas, man…well, I’m sure you’ve seen the commercials. Besides, I’m confident that you’ve still got an Ace tucked up behind your cufflink somewhere. I’m rooting for you, Mr. President. I’m just about done here, Sir, but let me say, in case you’re interested in picking up a copy for yourself, that you can purchase this literary masterpiece in any “Barnes & Noble” nationwide. They sell it online, too. I believe the web address is www.barnesandnoble.com. It’s entitled “Webster’s New World Dictionary.” Don’t worry--it’s not as intimidating as it sounds. Personally, I prefer the red paperback version, but that’s just me. I’m sure any copy would suffice. One more fine selection for you before I wrap up. This one’s my personal favorite. You won’t be able to find it in your book, though, so don’t bother looking. 4. Flip-flop n. - one who consistently changes one’s political, moral, or ethical position. I’m not positive, but I believe that if you search its synonyms, you’ll find “John Kerry” listed there. You remember Senator Kerry, don’t you, Mr. President? He was your uncomfortably close contender in the 2004 elections. That guy never could make up his mind. It’s a good thing we saw through his farce. We need a capable leader like you in office if we’re going to win this war. We’ve got to get those WMD’s out of Iraq! Or…find those responsible for 9/11. No, wait--we’ve got to introduce a democratic government into the Middle East. Well, whatever it is we’re doing in Iraq, Mr. President, it’s a super plan. I am confident that you will lead us to victory. But just in case your current plan fails, let me offer one suggestion: bring our troops home. That way, you can reorganize your efforts while preserving the most important element - human life. Perhaps your new plan might incorporate a pinch more diplomacy. Maybe you can’t coerce a culture centuries of years in the making into the immediate acceptance of democracy. It seems a bit contradictory, doesn’t it? Besides, brute force can be exhausting. And what about the UN? If Iraq proves to be a legitimate threat to population the world over, I’m sure that it would be willing to lend a hand. Of course, you’d probably have to apologize to Secretary General Kofi Annan first. After all, he did claim that your initial invasion was “illegal.” It seems that you violated some part of the United Nations Charter. Don’t get hung up on that, though, Mr. President. It’s just a technicality. I’m sure you knew what you were doing. Well, Sir. That’s all for now. I know you’ve got more pressing things to do--briefings to read and legislation to sign. If you have trouble washing the blood from your hands tonight, Mr. President, don’t worry. I hear that “Tide” laundry detergent with bleach gets the blood off of anything. Yes, Sir, that’s right. Even off of those “stubborn whites.” -J.A.
